"BS 24 is triggered when someone discusses a recently terrifying situation, such as being held hostage, interrogated, or encountering a terrible act of violence,” said Dr. Su Do Nihm of the CDC. “It causes the victims to become delusional and fantasize how they would have responded with the calm, firm resolve of Kiefer Sutherland reading a television script.”

gonna be ill

"Bill and Georgia Thomas reported they were elated Monday when they met in the Oval Office with President George W. Bush to present him with a Purple Heart."......

"Thomas said he and his wife came up with the unprecedented idea to present the president with the Purple Heart over breakfast one morning a few months ago as they discussed the verbal attacks, both foreign and domestic, the commander in chief has withstood during his time in office.

"We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds," Thomas said."......

rest of the story

huh

We live three blocks from 135 in Natick, MA. 135 is the route used for the Boston marathon. It was stormy out this morning. One of our screens on our screened-in porch blew off (not away, thank goodness). I worked from home cause I didn't want to wait for the train and walk from the T stop in this weather. I had a break in my morning telecons and decided to walk up to see if I could catch the first female and male runners and cheer them on in the rain and wind. It looked like I would just make it in time, too, according to boston.com. Alas, about half a block away from 135 I looked up and saw the female elite runners go by. Fast. Jesus. I think I might run that fast if I'm chased in a dream. Anyway, I did manage to catch the first male runners. It was two Kenyans. I snapped a photo. Then, 3/4 of a mile behind was the rest of the pack. 3/4 OF A MILE LEAD at the 9ish mile mark these two had. Granted, I knew by the end that they wouldn't have such a stellar lead, but I was still in awe....it was fun to cheer them on and I got a nice break from work. Maybe I'll do this next year.....

otters

oh.my.god this is the cutest thing ever:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epUk3T2Kfno

Otters always remind me of my friend Jeff who passed away three years ago. But it's a good reminder. Happy memories fill my brain and warm me. This video is something he would have appreciated. Well, who wouldn't?

birthday stuff

My birthday is Wednesday. Not a milestone birthday or anything, 38. As I get older, the less I care about these things. And the less I care about getting stuff. The thing is, I'm at a point in my life where if I want something, I just go buy it. I don't wait for a gift event. So now I'd rather have something that contributes to a fond memory. A ski trip. Other travel. Massage. Facial. Dinner to a really nice restaurant. A show. Etc.

Work for the past few months has held me hostage. As in, I'm being held hostage to two clinical trial timelines and I can't just "leave somewhere fun for a long weekend" whenever I want (yeah, there are bigger problems one can face, but when your'e the type of person who likes to wander elsewhere often this can feel very constraining). I'm not complaining, life is good. I'm just putting things in context. When I found out a week ago that things had pushed out a month I decided to make the upcoming weekend a long weekend and do something fun with nbh for my bday. I thought we could head to Montreal (haven't been there yet), but my passport renewal hasn't come through yet, so we have to stick with something within the borders of America. Well, I found it. We're going to head up to Stowe, VT on Friday and come back Sunday (nbh can't take Monday off, but I am). We're going to stay at the stoweflake resort and we get access to their entire fitness facility. I may take a pilates and yoga class, who knows. We still don't know if we'll ski as I think spring skiing usually sucks. Slushy. That'll be a last minute decision with a call to the mountain to ask about conditions (I don't trust the photo of the day).

I'm looking forward to my birthday trip! Especially since I will probably not be able to take any vacation time until Octoberish. And at that time I plan on taking a combo sick/vacation time to get some surgery done for my sleep apnea.

Oh yeah, I know I said I wasn't going to blog on cluefairy.com, but I decided if I was going to blog, it would be in LJ for now.

the interview meme

Ulrika tagged me. The rules are:

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I respond by asking you five questions of a creepily personal nature.
3. You update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, ask them five questions.

I'm going to put in a caveat that my friend Terry did: If I don't know you really well, I may not ask you questions because I probably can't write any that are in the category of "creepily personal nature". And it may take me a few days to actually ask the questions, so be patient.

I loved the questions. Especially 4 & 5.

1. What book/movie/musical group most recently really rocked your socks?

Not within the past day or two, but I recently saw this music video and ended up buying the song. War Photographer. The video rocked my world ("#1 marching band" makes me laugh every time I see it), but then I realized I really liked the song too.

2. You can be either an Olympic athlete, a Nobel-laureate, or a MacArthur grant winner? Which would you choose and what would you have done to get the honor?

Do I pick discovering a cure for AIDS (Nobel-laureate) or do I choose the lifestyle of a hardcore downhill skier who goes on the FIS circuits all over the world and win a gold at the Olympics? MacArthur grant would be interesting but I may need more than five years and $500K to make my discovery. Nobel-laureate who discovered a cure for AIDS and my favorite event in the Olympics is downhill skiing.

3. You decide you need to do something wacky and out of character to shake up your life -- what do you do?

Quit my job and become a travel writer for National Geographic. Out of character would be writing well enough to get a job at National Geographic (:-) and abandoning my perception of financial security.

4. The boss you love at the job you love has asked you to take on the task of acting as moderator and conflict resolution ombudsman in a volatile online support forum for six months while they find and train a new permanent person. What do you do?

I had a premonition you were going to ask something like this. hehe. I've done this (I'm not sure I'd call it volatile) as a co-moderator on BIX and MSN. I love my boss and job and the business world has user agreements and if this forum is in my industry, we're also heavily regulated, which makes things more black and white to me than in my personal life of shades of gray. I do it.

5. You've been offered 5 million dollars if you give up all post-1945 technology for a year. Can you do it?

Gah. As I get older a year seems to go by quickly, however misery feels like an eternity. The attraction is the money, obviously, as this would be enough for us to retire early (possibly Vancouver). There are talkies in the movie theatres, so that's good (hehe). I would have to give up my medicine, cpap, cell phone, mac, skis, hybrid, ipod, dvd's, well, you get the idea. The plus side would mean I'd make a large dent in my to read pile, not be reachable at all times, etc. I can do it as long as nbh is prepared to deal with me without my meds for a year (when I tried to switch to a different med a few years ago that was an ugly three months for me and I ended up switching back to what was a known entity). You may get a lot of telephone calls on the rotary phone from me for emotional support.
